Royal Family Tradition
In 2000, Budanyi Janos Winery bought a grape processing plant and a cellar with it in Szerencs. During the official transference of the cellar our family was very humbled to continue this royal legacy. We introduced one of the most beautiful cellars the Tokaj wine region has ever seen. The origins of this cellar could be traced back to 1901, to Count Harkányi. All the other records of the cellar were lost. It is claimed our cellar was built around the 1700s. Our cellar is 300 meters long and nearly 300 barrels can be found there. The most interesting part of the cellar is the Wine Museum. There are 5,000 bottles of historic wine under maturation. The “Essence” from 1936 can be found here. We are proud of the Aszú Essence from 1972 which was chosen to be the best wine of the world in America in 1996.
Revered Health Benefits
For a long tong we have been told that Essencia has curative and medical benefits. Indeed, in the 19th and 20th century the principle market for Tokaji Wine was as a kind of revitalizing tonic. A drink was given to the seriously ill by the teaspoonful. Many eminent doctors of the day attested to its remarkable powers. In some cases. People claimed that a single teaspoon of the elixir had restored patients on their deathbed to good health. These medical properties are the reason why the copper snake became the central element in Tokaj’s coat-of-arms. Gyula Krúdy (1878-1933, Hungarian journalist) noted the following about the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph:
Our old king is healthy because he drinks a bottle of Tokaji wine every day– is what they used to say in Hungary at the time when throughout his long reign Franz Joseph was involved in every kind of legend, anecdote and fairy tale.
